Grand welcome to Benazir Bhutto

dariece | 18 October, 2007 06:45

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto ended eight years of self exile from Dubai on Thursday, coming home to Karachi to lead her party into elections meant to return her country to civilian rule.

At least 250,000 people were in Karachi to welcome her, while 20,000 police were deployed to control the crowds. "I am very excited, very happy and very proud," Bhutto said as her flight from Dubai was about to touch down. "We have to have democracy in Pakistan."

She fled Pakistan following corruption allegations but an agreement with President Pervez Musharraf earlier this month cleared the way for her return. For years Bhutto had promised to return to Pakistan to end military dictatorship, yet she is coming back as a potential ally for President Pervez Musharraf, the army chief who seized power in a coup in 1999. There is speculation the two pro-Western leaders could share power in nuclear-armed Pakistan after a national election due in January. Al Qaeda linked militants have threatened to assassinate both.

Ms Bhutto is immensely popular with much of the population. Her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, founded the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and was executed in 1979, ensuring him the status of martyr.

Potter wizard grabs movie gongs

dariece | 13 October, 2007 06:04

THE latest Harry Potter film, directed by St Helens-born filmmaker David Yates, ruled the first ITV National Movie Awards last week. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth movie adaptation of J.K Rowling's bestselling novels, won three gongs at the glitzy awards evening, held at London's Royal Festival Hall.

David Yates' film, which topped the UK box office for two weeks in July, picked up the award for best family movie, ahead of summer blockbusters Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End and Spiderman 3.

Potter star Daniel Radcliffe also picked up the best male performance gong ahead of James Bond heartthrob Daniel Craig. And Emma Watson - who plays Hermione Granger in the ultra-popular movie series - collected the best actress award, just pipping the likes of Dame Judi Dench, Kirsten Dunst and Keira Knightley.

Cell Phone Addicts

dariece | 13 October, 2007 04:45

If your hipbone is connected to your BlackBerry or your thighbone is connected to your cell phone, those vibrations you're feeling in the car, in your pajamas, in the shower, may be coming from your headbone.

Many mobile phone addicts and BlackBerry junkies report feeling vibrations when there are none, or feeling as if they're wearing a cell phone when they're not.

The first time it happened to Jonathan Zaback, a manager at the public relations company Burson-Marsteller, he was out with friends and showing off his new BlackBerry Curve.

Zaback, who said he keeps his BlackBerry by his bed while he sleeps, checks it if he gets up in the middle of the night and wakes to an alarm on the BlackBerry each day, said this didn't worry him.

Some users compare the feeling to a phantom limb, which Merriam-Webster's medical dictionary defines as "an often painful sensation of the presence of a limb that has been amputated."

In certain circles, phantom vibrations are a point of pride.
